Statements on behalf of the EU

20 December 2017, New York – Intervention on behalf of the European Union and its Member States by Ms Eglantine Cujo, Counsellor, Legal Adviser, the Delegation of the European Union to the United Nations, General Assembly meeting, the item Culture of Peace: draft resolution – WAVE (a world against violence and violent extremism).

– As delivered –

Mr Chairman,

The European Union and its Member States is pleased to join consensus on the draft resolution on “a world against violence and violent extremism”. We are a strong supporter of preventing and countering all forms of violent extremism, including discrimination on the grounds of  sex, race, colour, ethnic or social origin, genetic features, language, religion or belief, political or any other opinion, membership of a national minority, property, birth, disability, age or sexual orientation.

We also very much welcome the reference to the Secretary-General’s Plan of Action on Preventing Violent Extremism as preventing violent extremism conducive to terrorism is key in our fight against terrorism.

We would finally like to recall that in order to reduce the appeal of violent extremism, States must respect international human rights, promote good governance and uphold the rule of law. We urge all states, including the sponsor of this resolution, to comply with their human rights obligations, including for women, as well as for the persons belonging to ethnic, sexual and religious minorities.

I thank you.
