Team Europe TraineeTalk: Discussing the Human Rights Council and the EU’s role in global human rights

The EU Delegation in Geneva hosted the first session of its new TeamEurope TraineeTalk series, an initiative designed to bring together trainees and young professionals from EU and Member State missions for informal discussions on global challenges and the EU’s multilateral engagement.

The session focused on the Human Rights Council and the EU’s role in advancing human rights globally, featuring:

  • Hilary Power, UN Geneva Director at Human Rights Watch

  • Friederike Tschampa, Head of the Human Rights Section at the EU Delegation

  • Thiseas Poullos, Human Rights Officer at the EU Delegation Geneva

Moderated by trainees from the Delegation, the discussion covered the effectiveness of the Human Rights Council, the EU’s work to strengthen multilateral human rights diplomacy, and the negotiation of the recent EU-led resolution establishing an accountability mechanism for Afghanistan.

The conversation also touched on the challenges facing multilateralism today and how the EU continues to champion human rights and accountability worldwide.

The TraineeTalk series is part of EUDEL’s outreach programme to strengthen the sense of belonging and shared purpose among Team Europe trainees in Geneva.

These discussions help us connect EU values to real-world diplomacy,  and to see how multilateral cooperation shapes global outcomes
