Speaking truth to power - Defending Media Freedom in Times of Crisis

As trainees at the Delegation of the EU to the UN and other international organisations, we are delighted to invite all trainees and young professionals of International Geneva to an inspiring discussion on Speaking truth to power - Defending Media Freedom in Times of Crisis.
When: Tuesday, 24 June 2025, 15:30–17:00
Where: EU Delegation, Rue du Grand-Pré 66, 1202 Geneva — Room A
We are honoured to welcome two distinguished speakers:
· Ms. Irene Khan, United Nations Special Rapporteur on freedom of expression and opinion
· Ms. Gunilla von Hall, Swedish journalist and foreign correspondent for Svenska Dagbladet
This session will highlight the indispensable role of freedom of expression and a pluralistic, and independent press in building and sustaining democratic societies. From shaping public debate to holding power to account, press freedom remains a cornerstone of democracy — especially during times of crisis.
We will also explore the increasing global threats to freedom of expression, including restrictions imposed by state and private actors, the silencing of critical journalists, and attacks on media outlets in conflict and authoritarian contexts.
Together, we will reflect on the responsibilities of the international community to protect journalists, defend press freedom, and ensure access to reliable information during turbulent times.
This event follows a successful format we have been organising for several years—designed by interns for interns. As trainees at the EU Delegation, we believe this is a unique opportunity to engage directly with leading voices in the field. We are looking forward to an engaging exchange, so have your questions ready and help us make this event as insightful as possible.
This event is open to all trainees and young professionals of International Geneva (Permanent Missions, UN bodies and NGOs). Please confirm your attendance here until Monday, 23 June.
