Update on the Global Coalition for Social Justice
GB.352/INS/4
EU statement
Chair,
I have the honour to speak on behalf of the European Union and its Member States.
The European Union and its Member States align with the Government Group statement.
- We thank the Office for the update on the Global Coalition for Social Justice. We are happy to see the Global Coalition taking more and more shape and we thank the Office for its hard work on it. We reiterate that urgent actions are needed for ensuring social justice worldwide. This is why we continue to strongly support the Global Coalition for Social Justice and our expectations towards its activities are high.
- We commend the Director General and the Office for having reached over 300 partners joining the Coalition, including a large number of EU Member States as well as the European Commission, who joined on behalf of the EU. We congratulate for the successful Inaugural Forum on 13 June 2024 on the occasion of the 112th ILC as well as for the webinars in spring of this year which laid further ground to the thematic development of the initiative and to the networking activities.
- We welcome the support given to the Coordinating Group for its first meeting held on 22 May 2024 and are looking forward to its next meeting in December this year.
- Based on this preparatory work already done, we would like to have more information from the Office on the timing and expected deliverables of the first concrete actions as well as the cooperation with the different international institutions. We would also be interested in learning more about the synergies with ILO initiatives, including the Global Accelerator on Jobs and Social Protection for Just Transition and the initiative on living wages, and how they could expand their impact under the auspices of the Coalition and vice versa.
- We consider the connections and interlinkages between the Global Coalition for Social Justice and the upcoming World Social Summit in 2025 as of crucial importance. The Coalition should play a crucial role in contributing to the Summit's objectives and ensuring effective follow-up. Therefore, we kindly ask the Office to explain in more detail whether or in what form it plans to use the Coalition specifically to this highly important event and how this work should to be prepared.
- Additionally, we would like to reiterate that we see the ILO’s State of Social Justice Report as an important work to complement and give visibility to the action-oriented initiatives undertaken by Coalition partners. In our opinion, it is essential for the first edition of the report to feed into the 2025 World Social Summit. For this reason, we are looking forward to hearing how this report will contribute to the Summit.
- With these considerations, we support the decision point and look forward to further information on the Coalition’s work.
Thank you, Chair.
