Freedom of Religion or Belief (FORB)

EU statement
Mr President,
The European Union wishes to thank the Special Rapporteur for her report, shining light on the topic of honouring the deceased. This topic equally affects all people around the world. As freedom of religion and belief is central to ensuring dignity to each human being, this is especially true in the context of death and mourning.
Mr President,
Allow me to congratulate the mandate of the Special Rapporteur for reaching its 40th anniversary. This significant milestone speaks volumes of the importance of this human right, not only as a pillar for ensuring that every individual can live according to their own beliefs and choices, but also as a cornerstone of peaceful, inclusive and resilient societies.
40 years on, the mandate remains more relevant than ever, as the situation is not improving. Many persons across the world, including in Europe, continue to face intolerance, stigmatization, discrimination, hatred, persecution and violence because of their religion or belief, or lack thereof. In some cases these abuses extend also to funeral practices and commemoration of the deceased.
The EU reaffirms its steadfast commitment to the right to freedom of thought, conscience, religion or belief for all. We work both at home and internationally to uphold this right, but there still is much to do.
Special Rapporteur, 40 years on, how can States better assist the mandate in pursuing its work?
Thank you.
