Mandate of the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders
                                                                                                                                            
EU General Comment

Mr President,

I speak on behalf of the EU Member States who are members of the Council. This statement has been agreed by the EU as a whole. 

We thank Norway for once again presenting this initiative to the Council. The EU strongly supports the renewal of this critically important mandate.

The EU is a staunch supporter of human rights defenders and remains committed to creating and maintaining a safe and enabling environment for them to carry out their work, both online and offline. 

Human rights defenders play a pivotal role in the protection and promotion of human rights in all regions across the globe, often putting themselves at great personal risk, and this mandate plays a crucial role in protecting those brave individuals. It is essential that the Human Rights Council today takes action on this resolution to renew the mandate of the Special Rapporteur. 

We commend Norway’s constructive approach to this mandate renewal and for their extensive outreach with all States and relevant stakeholders.

The EU is pleased to support this text as presented by Norway and we call on this Council to adopt this resolution by consensus.
