Geneva, 21/09/2020 - 16:13, UNIQUE ID: 200921_15
Statements on behalf of the EU

Madam President,

The EU warmly welcomes Ms. Claudia Mahler and congratulates her for the appointment as Independent Expert. We thank her for the first report to this Council, entitled “Human rights of older persons: The Data Gap”.

Data collection relating to older persons and the enjoyment of their human rights is a fundamental tool to create adequate and evidence-based policies and actions. The lack of accessible, meaningful and representative data on age impedes the knowledge about the real situation and vulnerabilities of older persons.

We appreciate the focus on the need for data collection in topics such as age discrimination, violence, abuse, maltreatment, neglect, poverty and adequate standard of living, social protection and the right to work and care. In order to obtain relevant statistical data we believe it is important that age-related data-disaggregation is prepared and implemented diligently.

The EU and its M-S’s are fully committed to tackling possible challenges and to promoting active ageing. We believe a human rights approach is essential to guarantee older persons remain active contributors to society.

We believe that is important to safeguard the implementation of international rights and standards for the protection of the rights of older persons in order to ensure that their specific concerns are visible and respected.

Ms. Mahler, the current pandemic further highlighted the vulnerability of our elders and the need for solidarity and better protection. How can we ensure that older persons are included in the post-pandemic measures and not further discriminated?

I thank you.
