More than 500 local citizens came to Seti Square, in the center of Mestia to join the event. “EU in Svaneti” organized by the Delegation of the European Union to Georgia was the second regional event in 2019 after celebrations in Tbilisi and Tsklatubo.

The visitors from Svaneti were invited to learn about the history and diversity of the European Union with informative and fun activities taking place throughout the day. EU-funded programmes presented and showcased the opportunities EU creates for the inhabitants of the region and made them discover concrete examples of EU support to Georgia.

The event was officially opened by Vincent Rey, head of Cooperation of the European Union, Molly Lien, head of Swedish Development Cooperation, Heinz Habertheuer, Director of Department Programmes of Austrian Development Agency and Kapiton Zhorzholiani, Major of Mestia.

Children participated in various games and learning activities. The visitors were also invited to compete in a chess competition and taste delicious food from local chefs.

The event followed the launch of two large-scale, EU-funded projects for the region, which will focus on local economic development.  Find out more about the projects here.
