“Go far, go together”: Celebrating 75 Years of European Unity and Solidarity

To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, the EU Delegation to the UN, the Permanent Mission of the EU to the WTO and the Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU brought together colleagues, partners and friends for an evening of celebration, reflection and solidarity in the heart of International Geneva.

Held at Geneva's famous Bâtiment des Forces Motrices, the Europe Day celebration marked the 75th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration and underlined the European Union’s enduring commitment to peace, democracy and multilateralism, even amid profound geopolitical change.

Ambassadors Michele Cervone d’Urso, chargé d'affaires of the European Union Delegation, Ambassador João Aguiar Machado, Permanent Representative of the EU to the World Trade Organization and Ambasador Mirosław Broiło, Permanent Representative of Poland to the UN in Geneva, delivered the evening’s opening remarks.

“Europe Day is a powerful reminder that peace, democracy and solidarity are not a given – they are built, protected and renewed with each generation.” | EU Ambassador Michele Cervone d’Urso of the European Union Delegation

Ambassador Michele Cervone d’Urso recalled the historic significance of 9 May 1950 – the day the Schuman Declaration laid the foundation for European integration after the devastation of the Second World War. Encompassing what we all believe in: partnership, dialogue and mutual respect, this spirit of cooperation is undoubtedly what constitutes the common DNA that the EU shares with the UN and close partners.

Amid global conflicts and mounting challenges, from the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine to the Sudan, Yemen, the DRC and elsewhere, Ambassador Michele Cervone d’Urso underscored the need to defend international law and shared values that are “literally under fire”.

The speakers also recognised renewed momentum for global cooperation, including support for UN80 reforms, progress on the Pandemic Agreement, and a breakthrough consensus on Syria at the Human Rights Council — all demonstrating that Geneva remains a key multilateral hub that is able to deliver.

“The European Union was founded to make war in Europe unthinkable again. It is our overriding goal. That is why we stand by Ukraine and its people in their hour of peril and need, as they fight for sovereignty and freedom. And it is why we continue to champion multilateralism, because global challenges can only be addressed through cooperation and dialogue — not by force.”
| EU Ambassador João Aguiar Machado, Permanent Representative to the WTO

Ambassador João Aguiar Machado reflected on today’s complex geopolitical environment and the role of international organisations in navigating uncertainty. He called for bold reforms and adaptability to ensure the continued relevance and effectiveness of the multilateral system.

Throughout, Europe’s commitment to multilateralism and solidarity stood out as a constant in turbulent times: from standing with Ukraine to shaping a carbon-neutral future and fostering economic resilience while defending democracy and social justice.

“Let this evening be another small step towards building our community spirit in close cooperation with our partners and friends from all over the world.” | Ambassador Mirosław Broiło, Permanent Representative of Poland to the UN in Geneva

As current holder of the EU Council Presidency, Ambassador Broiło highlighted Europe’s journey from post-war division to unity in diversity. Stressing the cultural dimension of European cooperation, he reminded the audience that coming together — through food, music and friendship — remains a powerful symbol of shared purpose.

The guests enjoyed a vibrant cultural programme featuring the flavours of EU Member States and music from Poland’s Atom String Quartet and DJ Badies.

Happy Europe Day from Geneva!
