The EU and the UN stand by those forgotten in the Ukraine conflict

The fourth year of conflict in eastern Ukraine affects more than 4.4 million people, of which 3.4 million require humanitarian assistance and protection. Hostilities continue with almost daily shelling, with frequent localised clashes affecting hundreds of settlement.

The rapid spread and contamination of mines and un-exploded ordnances in conflict areas puts the lives of millions of Ukrainians in danger. Every day, millions of people, including 1.6 million internally displaced people are being forced to make impossible choices between food, medicine, shelter, heating or their children’s education, yet the world has largely forgotten about their plight.

Today, the European Commission announced assistance of €24 million to respond to the ongoing humanitarian crisis on both sides of the contact line.
