AFET mission to Kyiv

After meeting with Prime Minister of Ukraine, the minister of economy, the Deputy Speaker and leading members in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, as well as with the Prosecutor-general of Ukraine, representatives of anti-corruption agencies and of civil society, David McAllister, Chair of the AFET Committee, stated:

“We appreciate the genuine determination of the new authorities to reform the country in key areas such as the fight against corruption, and encouraged them to build on previous achievements and address the remaining shortcomings. We understand the desire to seize the momentum for reforms, and stressed the need to preserve room for proper parliamentary proceedings and to foster the culture of political dialogue in order to consolidate democracy.

We also expressed our appreciation for the ambitious European agenda and the measures already taken to ensure an efficient coordination between the different institutions in the implementation of the Association Agreement. The expectation of Ukrainian citizens towards their politicians is to transform the country into a modern, transparent, well-functioning democracy, and our Association Agreement is a crucial vehicle to this end. On our side, we wil continue to strive to do everything to bring Ukraine closer to the EU.

We reiterate our support to the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of Ukraine within its internationally recognised borders.“
