Statement by the Spokesperson on the peace process in South Sudan

Text

The Intergovernmental Authority for Development (IGAD) recently endorsed in Juba, South Sudan, the agreement reached by the South Sudanese parties to extend the pre-transitional period provided for in the peace agreement. The six-month extension should allow the parties and stakeholders to make progress on key outstanding issues of the peace agreement, including the formation of a unified security force and the number of states and their boundaries. A realistic implementation plan should be established. The extension should not influence the time schedule for the electoral process stipulated in the peace agreement. The funds pledged by the incumbent transitional government for the implementation of the agreement are a positive step. It is important that the funds are managed in an accountable and transparent manner and in the interest of the South Sudanese people.      IGAD's continued support and engagement in the South Sudan peace process will remain instrumental at this critical time in the process, as the parties renew their intentions to implement the agreement in letter and spirit. The European Union continues to stand by South Sudan and its people in their efforts to make sustained peace a reality.
