Federica Mogherini, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, met with Foreign Minister of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin this morning to discuss the latest developments in the country. The High Representative informed Minister Klimkin that at the informal meeting of EU Foreign Ministers (Gymnich) this past weekend the EU's unanimous support for full implementation of Minsk Agreements was reaffirmed. The recent adoption of the constitutional amendments by Verkhovna Rada was an important step forward in the implementation.

The High Representative and Minister Klimkin also discussed the upcoming local elections in Ukraine scheduled for 25 October and agreed on the need for international monitoring of these crucial elections. They welcomed the upcoming deployment of the OSCE/ODIHR Election Observation Mission to which EU Member States will contribute by making observers available. For the implementation of the Minsk Agreements it is fundamental that local elections in the separatist-held areas in eastern Ukraine take place in accordance with Ukrainian law and OSCE electoral standards.
