The project costs EUR 1.6 mln, of which EUR 1.15 mln is covered by an EU grant and EUR 490,600 by the city budget. The project lasts from 2018 to 2020.
"Increasing energy efficiency in educational buildings is another step towards sustainable energy development in the city of Sumy," Oleksandr Lysenko, Mayor of Sumy, said.
The main objective of the project is to reduce energy consumption by 1,861 MWh/year ( by 58%) for the buildings of Sumy Specialized School №7, Sumy Specialized School №9 and Sumy Secondary School №20 and lower СО2 emissions by 651.5 tonnes/year ( by 45%) and make the stay of students and staff in the buildings more comfortable (by 44%).
Implementation of energy efficiency measures requires a thorough preparatory work. That is why during the first year of the project implementation, technical inspections of buildings and engineering networks were carried out and energy audit reports for all project buildings were produced.
The Covenant of Mayors is a European initiative bringing together local, regional and national authorities voluntarily committed to implementing EU climate and energy goals. As of today, the Covenant of Mayors is the world’s largest climate and energy initiative, bringing together nearly 7,755 signatories with a population of over 250 mln people.
The Covenant of Mayors – Demonstration Projects (CoM – DeP) is a separate programme developed at the level of the European Commission. The goal of the programme is to provide appropriate support in the implementation of energy efficiency projects in selected cities according to their action plans.
In September 2015, the Sumy City Council joined the Covenant of Mayors, and in 2016 approved the Sustainable Energy Action Plan of Sumy city until 2025. The document defines a set of strategic projects for increasing energy efficiency of the municipal economy and their impact on reducing CO2 emissions. The main goal of the Sustainable Energy Action Plan of Sumy is through energy efficient measures to reduce by 2025 CO2 emissions by 26.2% (134,200 tonnes of СО2); lower annual energy consumption by 21.3% (371,700 MWh); decrease the share of natural gas by 5.8%, (10.8 mln cubic meters) at the expense of replacing it with alternative sources; and cut annual expenditures on fuel and energy resources by at least UAH 344.3 mln.
In 2017, the Sumy Council's project "Increasing energy efficiency in educational buildings of Sumy city" won an EU grant to support the development and implementation of the Sustainable Energy Action Plans.
