Our Ambassador had the honour to participate and deliver remarks at this year's international #candlelight memorial to honour the memory of those who have lost their lives to #AIDS.

On the occasion to mark the International Candle Light Memorial day in Uganda, European Union Ambassador to Uganda H.E Attlio Pacifici had the honor to participate and deliver remarks at an event organised today (27.05.2021) under the auspices of the Office of the President, to honour the memory of those who have lost their lives to AIDS.

He recalled European Union support to Uganda in the early 90s that led to the birth of Nakesero Blood Bank, at a time when blood transfusions were a very effective mode of HIV transmission. Ambassador Pacifici noted that the EU has since 2002 continued its global efforts in the health sector by joining and funding The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. The EU and its Member States currently contribute to almost 50% of all resources received by the Global Fund.

Ambassador Pacifici stated that HIV and AIDS continues to pose a major public health and economic challenge, particularly for young people in Uganda and said stigma needs to be addressed, as this is a key factor limiting testing, visits to health centres and medication adherence. "I urge all stakeholders to walk a path that aims at reducing vulnerabilities and changing behaviours, especially among youth and women and make Uganda and Africa HIV/AIDS free," he said.
