12 young Ugandans have been awarded scholarships to pursue Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degrees in European Universities.

The European Union and its Member States have for several decades been active partners in supporting higher education and have enabled a total of one hundred thirty nine Ugandans to pursue studies in Europe since 2004 under Erasmus Mundus I, Erasmus Mundus II and Erasmus+.

On 19 August, EU Head of Delegation to Uganda, H.E Ambassador Attilio Pacifici hosted a pre-departure event at his residence together with the Ambassadors of Belgium and Germany to Uganda, to flag off 12 Ugandan students who won scholarships to pursue graduate study in Europe. Under the Erasmus+ programme, the 12 students selected this year will study in at least two different universities, located in different European countries including Belgium, Germany, Portugal, Spain and the United Kingdom.

In his remarks, Ambassador Pacifici urged the scholarship awardees "to be Ambassadors for Uganda in Europe. And when you complete the Erasmus+ programme, to make a difference for Uganda in her development agenda by innovating, solving problems, fighting corruption, addressing issues tha affect Ugandans, and overall to fully contribute to Uganda's development."

"Under 'normal' circumstance, all of you would have left for Europe already, but because of COVID-19 travel restrictions, some of you have already begun courses online, while the majority will begin online soon. I obviously hope that all of you will soon be able to travel to the hosting European countries," said Ambassador Pacifici.
