The European Union and Norway are pleased to announce shortlisted candidates for the EU Human Rights Defenders Award 2020.

From more than 50 nominations received, three human rights defenders in Uganda have been shortlisted for the 2020 EU Human Rights Defenders Award. The three shortlisted nominees are:

Aimé Izilaba Moninga, an outspoken human rights defender, breaking new ground as leader of Men of Hope, the first organization for male survivors of conflict-related sexual violence, acting both at national and international level.

Victo Nalule, is an active and inspirational advocate for disability rights, herself being a differently-abled women and founder of Tunaweza Initiative, an organization that is currently also involved in ensuring disabled women’s and children’s rights in the Covid-19 response.

Damon Wamara, a fearless and hands-on rights defender in the field of child victims of trafficking, in the country and within the region, who is leading the organization Dwelling places.

This year again, the number and standard of nominations for the annual EU Human Rights Defenders Award were very high and we congratulate Aimé, Victo and Damon on making the shortlist. Nominations received by the EU and Norway spanned human rights defenders from all over the country, working on a wide range of human rights issues.

The human rights award is intended to honor outstanding, dedicated persons and their achievements in Uganda. I’m pleased, but not surprised, to see that there are many strong candidates also this year”, says Per Lindgärde, Sweden’s ambassador to Uganda. “This is a great opportunity to recognize some of the unselfish and courageous people in Uganda involved in the effort to build a democratic society based on the respect for human rights and the rule of law.”

Every year, the EU Delegation in Uganda, EU Member States and the Embassy of Norway present this award to recognise the outstanding contribution of a human rights defender in Uganda. The winner of the EU HRD Award for 2020 will be announced in the coming weeks.
