European Commission supports the launch of a new international Portuguese Training Centre for Conference Interpreting in Macao

The newly launched International Portuguese Training Centre for Conference Interpreting at the Macao Polytechnic Institute reinforces the role of Macao as a teaching hub for the Portuguese language in Asia thereby strengthening the people-to-people, economic and cultural links to the European continent.

The European Commission has been helping Macao to build up its capacity to provide high quality interpretation training. European Commission experts in interpretation have helped to design and develop the curriculum of the Masters’ course in Conference Interpretation. The European Commission will send some of its best trainers to provide pedagogical assistance to the course and the course’s teachers.

Florika Fink-Hooijer, Director-General of the European Commission’s interpretation service, said in a speech delivered at the opening ceremony: “The European Commission has a long-standing cooperation with Macao. Setting up the new Training Centre and offering a Master’s course in Conference Interpretation are important steps to help Macao – and China – to foster cross-regional relations based on mutual interests, the promotion of people-to-people contacts and multilingualism, which are essential for the success of effective multilateralism.”

The training activities supported by the European Commission over the years are part of the Commission's ongoing strategy to help develop high-level professional standards for conference interpreters and interpreter training in several countries across the world.

Cooperation with Macao in the field of interpretation has a strong people-to-people component and aims at developing high quality interpretation capacity for the bilingual – Chinese-Portuguese – Macanese public administration. This very concrete form of cooperation helps to preserve Portuguese language in Macao and to build effective bilateral and multilateral relations, whilst contributing to a better understanding of the EU in Macao and mainland China.

Background:

For the past 30 years, the European Commission’s interpretation department has been contributing with its technical know-how to interpreter training projects in the EU but also in countries around the world such as China, Vietnam, Mongolia, Cuba, Russia and several African countries.

The Directorate-General for Interpretation of the European Commission is one of the leading interpreting services in the world. It provides interpretation in the 24 official languages of the European Union (EU) and several non-EU languages. The interpreters of DG Interpretation work for the European institutions (European Council, the Council of Ministers of the EU, the European Commission, the European Economic and Social Committee, the Committee of the Regions, the European Investment Bank and a number of EU agencies).

The European Commission has been supporting Macao in the field of interpretation since 2006. Thanks to this cooperation, over 100 interpreters have received specialised interpretation training in Macao and Brussels over the years.

The Macao Polytechnic Institute has been working with DG Interpretation on a regular basis since 2006. Since 2010, annual seminars have been organised and conducted by interpreter trainers from DG Interpretation, bringing together interpreters from various Chinese ministries, as well as course leaders from universities in Macao and mainland China.

The Macao Polytechnic Institute is the Alma mater of most of the Macanese officials who have received specialised interpretation training in Macao and Brussels since 2006, under the decade-long cooperation between the European Commission and Macao SAR. This particular strand of cooperation with Macao SAR’s Public Administration and Civil Service Bureau (SAFP) has allowed more than one hundred current and aspiring civil servants to develop and enhance their interpretation skills through training courses in Portuguese and Chinese, both in Macao and at the European Commission in Brussels.
