Three Ugandan human rights defenders have been shortlisted for the 2019 EU Human Rights Defenders Award. The three candidates are: -
The standard of nominations was extremely high this year, with the EU and Norway receiving an overwhelming response to its call for nominations for the 2019 Award. Dozens of human rights defenders from all over the country, working on a wide range of human rights issues, were nominated.
"The large number of strong nominations received this year reflects the many serious human rights issues that are affecting Ugandans on a daily basis all across the country", said EU Ambassador to Uganda, H.E. Attilio Pacifici. "At the same time, it also reflects the vibrancy of the human rights movement here and the fact that for every human rights challenge that emerges there are courageous defenders willing to take up the fight."
The EU HRD Award is given annually by the EU Delegation in Uganda, EU Member States present in the country and the Embassy of Norway to recognise the outstanding contribution of a human rights defender in Uganda. The 2019 Award winner will be announced at a ceremony in Kampala on Monday 6th May, 2019.
