The third edition of the Kampala Art Biennale (KAB 2018) officially opened on 24 August by the European Union Head of Delegation to Uganda, H.E Ambassador Attilio Pacifici, together with KAB 2018 manager, Mr Daudi Karungi, and KAB curator, Mr Simon Njami.
The European Union is a major sponsor of the KAB 2018 and in particular has made possible the Studio component of the Biennale, allowing 7 renowned masters work with young apprentices from Uganda and else where on the African continent to create original works that are now the highlight of the exhibition.
EU support to the biennale is made possible as part of celebrations to mark the 2018 European Year of Cultural Heritage, described by Amb. Pacifici as "a celebration aiming to showcase our heritage as a unique, rich and diverse mosaic of cultural and creative expression."
He stressed the importance of the Kampala Art Biennale and art in general for it represents a hub of creativity and free expression, especially for young people, a key audience for EU engagement and action in Uganda.
"KAB calls also for a substantial change of the perception of artistic production in Africa: it calls for bringing African art into the global art market; for building new jobs around art, such as specialised journalism; for sponsorship of art and culture by business people and private companies," he said.
The Kampala Art Biennale 2018 is hosted at the Design Hub in Kampala, and is open to the general public until 24th September 2018.
