ITER EUROPAEUM: 50th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between the European Union and the Holy See
Starting on #EUROPEDAY2021
The Iter Europaeum aims to show and enhance the deep links between the European Union and its 27 Member States, and the Holy See. For the walkway, each country has chosen a church to which it is particularly attached to for historical reasons or because of the links with their community in Rome.
Interview with EU Ambassador to the Holy See
The Iter Europaeum is a project of the EU Delegation, in collaboration with the EU Member States’ Embassies accredited to the Holy See. It will be launched on 9 May 2021 in Arcibasilica di San Giovanni in Laterano, with a Holy Mass celebrated by H.E. Cardinal Angelo De Donatis, Vicar General of His Holiness. Mr Egils Levits, President of Latvia, will be present.
The launch will coincide with Europe Day, celebrated every year on 9 May and dedicated to Robert Schuman, the main architect of the agreement that led to the establishment of the European Communities in 1957.
The Holy Mass, celebrated at 12:00 on 9 May by H.E. Cardinal De Donatis, will be followed by a visit to the nearby Basilica Santi Quattro Coronati selected by Latvia. The walkway will continue with a visit to the Basilica San Clemente, chosen by Czechia, and conclude at the nearby Hungarian Basilica di Santo Stefano Rotondo al Celio, ending the section of the walkway on 9 May.
The Iter Europaeum will continue until 27 June 2021. Each Sunday, there will be liturgical celebrations, concerts and guided tours at the selected churches and basilicas. Due to the restrictions in place to contain the Covid-19 pandemic, participation on Sundays will be by invitation only. All media are invited to participate.
Members of the public will be able to take the walkway at any other time during the opening hours of the churches, with the map and guidebook that can be found on www.itereuropaeum.eu.
In the churches, visitors will find totems explaining the history of the relationship of the Member State and the Holy See, as well as, with the selected church. The totems will remain on display for several months.
The dedicated website www.itereuropaeum.eu will go live on 9 May 2021.
