Extremely concerned after the deadly impact of Cyclone Idai in Zimbabwe, the European Union is on the ground in the worst affected areas. With our cooperation partners from the Health Development Fund and the Zimbabwe Resilience Building Fund, we are supporting those in immediate need, while also assessing how to best assist further, not only in the coming days, but also in the medium term.

Very helpful for this assessment is Copernicus, the EU’s Earth Observation Programme. Their Rapid Mapping Team is producing emergency maps to support first responders and relief management planners.

The Zimbabwean Government has confirmed that at least 96 people have died, while 200 remain missing in the Manicaland and Masvingo provinces. About 15000 people are affected by the cyclone.
