EU Delegation Bids Farewell to Ambassador Peter Cavendish

Port of Spain, August 26, 2025 — The European Union Delegation to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago announced today the retirement of H.E. Peter Cavendish, who will officially step down on August 31, concluding a remarkable 30-year career within European Union institutions. Ambassador Cavendish has served as the EU Ambassador to Trinidad and Tobago since 2021, playing a pivotal role in strengthening bilateral relations and fostering development cooperation.
Appointed in September 2020, Ambassador Cavendish assumed his duties in early 2021, following pandemic-related travel delays. He presented his credentials to then-President Paula Mae Weekes on July 22, 2021. Throughout his tenure, Ambassador Cavendish championed initiatives that supported sustainable development, human rights and gender equality, and economic growth. Notably, he oversaw the successful construction of Trinidad and Tobago’s first solar park at Piarco International Airport and the completion of the Spotlight Initiative aimed at combating gender and family violence.
Ambassador Cavendish also actively promoted business development and entrepreneurship through the Innovation and Fit4Europe programmes, alongside enhancing educational collaboration via the Erasmus+ Programme. His close work with the Government of Trinidad and Tobago addressed critical challenges, including funding technical support for taxation and fisheries compliance, in order to expand trade opportunities with EU member states.
Reflecting on his service, Ambassador Cavendish expressed, “It has been a privilege to work alongside the people and government of Trinidad and Tobago. Together, we have made meaningful progress in strengthening our partnership and supporting sustainable growth. I leave with immense respect for the country’s vibrant culture and its people’s creativity and resilience.”
The Honourable Sean Sobers, Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, extended his gratitude during a recent courtesy call, recognizing Ambassador Cavendish’s “dedicated service and invaluable contribution to fostering cooperation between Trinidad and Tobago and the European Union.”
The European Union Delegation will welcome Cécile Tassin-Pelzer, who will succeed Ambassador Cavendish, in September. Ms. Tassin-Pelzer brings extensive experience from her current role as Advisor in the European Commission’s DG International Partnerships, Africa Directorate, and is committed to continuing the strong collaboration between the EU and Trinidad and Tobago.
