As of the 01 Feb 2018, ITS (Italian Ship) San Giusto has taken over from ITS Etna, as the new flagship of EUNAVFOR MED Operation Sophia. This is the second operational tour for the San Giusto in the EU task Force as she previously served in the operation from April to August 2017.

Whilst deployed in the area of operations, aside from acting as the Flagship for the EU Task Force, also provided very significant supports to Op Sophia, contributing to the core mission of fighting human trafficking and smuggling networks, and hosted high-level events, such as the visit on board of the Italian Prime Minister and the Defense Minister on the 24th December 2017.

We wish fair winds and following seas for both ships.

The change of Flagship follows on from the recent change of command ceremony which saw Italian Navy Rear Admiral (Lower Half) Giuseppe Berutti Bergotto take over command of the Operation Sophia Task Force from Spanish Navy Rear Admiral (Lower Half) Javier MORENO. The change of command ceremony toook place onboard the Spanish ship Cantabria moored in Taranto Italian Naval base.
