On 10th of December, International Human Rights Day, the European Union Delegation in Timor-Leste, together with the Global Campus for Human Rights, organised “Your Rights, Your Future”, a Human Rights Quiz, at Centro Nacional Chega!, in Dili.
The purpose of the Quiz was to raise awareness on the importance of human rights education and to contribute to a better understanding of human rights.
The event was attended by Peace Nobel Prize Laureate Dr José Ramos Horta; Andrew Jacobs, Ambassador of the European Union to Timor-Leste; Hugo Fernandes, Executive Director of the National Centre Chega!; Roy Trivedy, Resident Coordinator of the United Nations; Estelle Duluc, French Cooperation Attachée; Cristina Faustino, Head of the Portuguese Cooperation/Camoẽs; Juvita Pereira Faria, Global Campus of Human Rights; Bella Galhos, Founder of Arcoiris; Benicia Eriana Magno, Deputy Ombudsman (PDHJ) and songwriter and musician Ego Lemos.
The Quiz, conducted by Ms Stella D’Assis in a fun atmosphere, tested 25 students from various universities in Dili on their knowledge in the field of international human rights standards, women’s rights, children’s rights, rights of persons with disabilities and of LGBTI people, and environmental rights. Participants received certificates signed by Dr. José Ramos Horta and the EU Ambassador and prizes to support their learning such as laptops, internet packages and books on human rights.
Ambassador Andrew Jacobs emphasised that “the European Union cares for human rights and firmly believes that a world with respect for human rights is a better world”.
2020 is a year of special achievements for the European Union which adopted its third Action Plan on Human Rights and Democracy (2020-2024) on 19 November and a Global Human Rights Sanctions Regime on 7 December.
