On the 13 January 2017, the Prime Minister Rui Araújo participated in the inauguration ceremony and stressed the importance for Timor-Leste to diversify its economy and publicly informed that in 30 years Atabae plantation may be worth 160 million dollar (according to expected growth and applying the current value of sandalwood).
On top of a steep hill overlooking Atabae, the Department of Forestry of the Ministry of Agriculture has organized a 100 ha sandal wood plantation.
The origin of the seeds is Timorese. In many cases intercropping is going to take place (maize during rainy season) and fast growing shade plants have been planted between the lines of sandalwood.
Sandalwood is an extremely valuable tree for the extraction of the sandal oil, and needs about 30 years before it can be harvested.
