On the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, we celebrate the resilience and resourcefulness of indigenous peoples around the world. This year, we join the United Nations in the call for a new social contract, where no one is left behind.

The text of the following statement was released by the Governments and Members of the Friends of the Mekong Group on the occasion of the 2021 Friends of the Mekong Ministerial Meeting.

The Heads of Delegation of the Friends of the Mekong (the Friends) met virtually on August 5, 2021. We welcomed the Heads of Delegation from the ASEAN Secretariat, the United Kingdom, and India, who participated as observers.


The European Union (EU), Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health, the World Health Organization Country Office for Thailand, the National Vaccine Institute and World Vision Foundation of Thailand today launched a programme to support the COVID-19 response of the government of Thailand and strengthen preparedness for future pandemics.

On the Day of International Criminal Justice, the European Union reaffirms its commitment to protect the judicial independence of the International Criminal Court and the integrity of the Rome Statute, while standing firm against any attempt to discredit the Court and obstruct its work

World Youth Skills Day 2021 will again take place in a challenging context due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. UNESCO estimates that schools were either fully or partially closed for more than 30 weeks between March 2020 and May 2021 in half the countries of the world. In late June, 19 countries still had full school closures, affecting nearly 157 million learners. And 768 million more learners were affected by partial school closures.

Global efforts to tackle the pandemic continue, as the world population continues to rise with unequal access to healthcare. On World Population Day, let’s raise awareness of the importance of sexual and reproductive health and rights around the world and how we protect and empower present and future generations.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) - European Union (EU) – Senior Officials’ Meeting was convened via videoconference on Thursday. The Meeting was co-chaired by Stanley Loh, Second Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Singapore and Gunnar Wiegand, Managing Director for Asia and the Pacific in the European External Action Service. The Meeting was attended by officials from all ASEAN and EU Member States, as well as by representatives from the European Commission and the ASEAN Secretariat.
