EU Delegation to host virtual cultural extravaganza to celebrate Europe Day and 46 years of partnership with Jamaica

08.05.2021

The Delegation of the European Union to Jamaica will mark Europe Day on Sunday, May 9, with an exciting virtual cultural extravaganza.

The event will showcase performances from Member States, in a push to foster a stronger appreciation of Europe through aspects of its cultural expressions.

“May 9 is a significant day for us, as we pause to celebrate the foundational values of our union - freedom, democracy, respect for the rule of law, equality and human rights. Culture is a very important vehicle for connecting people. So, we’ve worked with EU Member States to put together a lively and engaging package that will help to connect the dots between Jamaica and Europe,” said Ambassador Marianne Van Steen.

The one-hour event will also celebrate 46 years of the EU-Jamaica partnership.

Currently, the EU is the largest provider of grant funding to Jamaica, with a major roster of programmes aimed at reducing poverty, eliminating gender-based violence, advancing citizen security and modernising the justice system, among other objectives. The show will also feature brief messages from Government Ministers who will break down the ways in which EU support over years has made a difference in the lives of Jamaicans.

The virtual cultural extravaganza begins at 5:00 pm on Sunday, May 9 and will be broadcast on Jamaica Information Service social media pages (JIS YouTube and JIS Facebook).
