The Delegation of the European Union to Mozambique, in partnership with the United Nations and the Smurfs, organised on 18 September – the World Costal Cleanup Day - a beach cleanup action to raise awareness on marine pollution and on the need to protect oceans. The action was also in collaboration with the EU member states represented in Mozambique and Mozambique's ministries of Land and Environment and of Waters and Fisheries.

The #EUBeachCleanup action, held in three sections of Cost do Sol beach, in capital city Maputo, gathered more than two hundred volunteers who collected different types of litter, mostly plastic, glass, metal and facemasks.

As part of the measures to prevent COVID-19, Mozambique´s beaches remain closed to the public. However, the amount of litter collected came as call for people to continue protect the seas given the fact that most of the litter collected was originated by human action outside the sea.

The action was also an opportunity for joint messages by the EU, UN, the Government of Mozambique and civil society on the need to stimulate concrete actions to preserve the oceans, their ecosystems and biodiversity as important steps to mitigate the impact of climate change.

The beach cleanup effort by the EU delegation in Mozambique made it possible to collect close to 700kg of litter.
