EU Ambassador meets Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri

EU Ambassador Christina Lassen met yesterday with Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri to discuss the recent developments in Lebanon and the region.

 

Ambassador Lassen highlighted the importance of the ongoing budget discussions, welcoming the Government's stated commitment to reduce Lebanon's fiscal deficit and introduce comprehensive reforms. She expressed hope that the Council of Ministers would submit the draft budget to Parliament at the soonest to allow for Parliament's discussion and swift adoption.

 

Reaffirming the continuous support of the European Union for Lebanon's reform efforts, Lassen emphasised the need to make progress on all commitments related to the CEDRE Conference on economic development in Lebanon. In this context, she underlined the importance of transparency and tackling corruption including through the finalisation of the national anti-corruption strategy. 

 

Ambassador Lassen also highlighted the importance of preserving Lebanon's stability, and security amidst the challenges in the region. She hoped for positive developments concerning Lebanon's southern border and reaffirmed the European Union's commitment to assist the LAF, including on the establishment of a Model Regiment in South Lebanon as requested by the Government at the Rome Conference in 2018.
