Are you an EU citizen in Taiwan? Learn more about your right to consular protection and how you can benefit from it in Taiwan.

As an EU citizen, you can take simple steps to make consular protection more effective, for example:

  • Following the travel advice issued by your country’s Foreign Ministry.

  • When abroad, registering with your Embassy or Consulate and/or through dedicated platforms, if applicable.

Other tips include keeping an electronic copy of your travel documents, subscribing to a travel insurance or saving crisis contact details.

However, situations can arise in which you need consular protection.  Consular protection is the help an EU Member State can provide to its citizens in case they need assistance abroad. Typically, consular protection can include cases such as:

  • A need for emergency travel documents;

  • A serious accident or serious illness;

  • Relief and repatriation in case of an emergency;

  • Being a victim of crime;

  • Arrest or detention;

  • Death of a family member or other companion.

In Taiwan, 16 EU Member States have a resident office, while 11 do not.

Are you an EU citizen in need of consular protection in Taiwan?

  • You can contact your country’s resident office.

  • Otherwise, if you are a citizen of the following countries, there are some specific arrangements in place for your consular protection:

    • Citizens of Lithuania and Bulgaria should apply to the Polish Office in Taipei for general consular support while to the Hungarian Trade Office for document authentication / Schengen visa issuance.

    • Citizens of Estonia and Latvia should apply to the Germany Institute in Taipei.

    • Citizens of Greece should apply to the Austrian Office Taipei for Schengen visa issuance.

    • Citizens of Iceland and Norway should apply to The Trade Council of Denmark, Taipei for Schengen visa issuance.

    • Citizens of Liechtenstein should apply to the Trade Office of Swiss Industries.

    • Citizens of Luxembourg and Romania should apply to the Belgian Office Taipei for visa support.

    • Citizens of Malta and Slovenia should apply to the Hungarian Trade Office for Schengen visa issuance.

You need not worry if you are not covered by such specific arrangements: any EU citizen abroad whose own Member State has no local representation is entitled to consular protection from the diplomatic or consular authorities of any other EU Member State, under the same conditions as the nationals of that other EU Member State. So should you need consular protection, you are entitled to turn to any other EU Member State for consular protection.

You can find contact details of the resident EU Member States in Taiwan under the Travel and Study section.

Please note that the EU Delegation in Taiwan cannot provide direct consular assistance.
