Federica Mogherini, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, met the Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation, Sergey Lavrov, this afternoon in New York, in the margins of the 72nd UN General Assembly.

A number of issues was discussed, most notably the situation in Syria, ahead of the EU-hosted high level event on the future of Syria and the region that will take place on Thursday in New York; the Iran nuclear deal, ahead of the ministerial meeting on the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) that Federica Mogherini will chair tomorrow; the latest worrying developments in North Korea and the need to coordinate a united response to open up a credible political process to achieve the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula through peaceful means.
