Statement by the Spokesperson on the parliamentary elections in Jordan

Text

With the parliamentary elections last Tuesday, Jordan has sent a strong and positive signal to the world, that holding  well-organised, inclusive and peaceful elections in a troubled region is possible. A new parliament has now been elected and its members play an important role in further advancing the democratic process in their country.

Earlier yesterday, Jo Leinen, Chief Observer of the EU Election Observation Mission, the largest international mission on the ground, presented in Amman the mission's preliminary findings on the electoral process. The Mission will remain in the country until the completion of the electoral process and will present in about two months its final report which will include recommendations offered for consideration on how to further improve the process.

These recommendations will also guide the EU in its cooperation with Jordan's electoral authorities and in support of the democratically elected parliament and in the further development of the political party system. Jordan is a key partner for the EU in the region and globally, and these actions are fully embedded in the strong partnership between us.
