Elias Deplazes | Social worker | Liechtenstein

The global IDAHOT theme for 2025 chosen by Civil Society Organisations is “The Power of Communities”. What does this motto mean to you personally?

Together we are stronger. The strength of a community with shared interests and values is often underestimated. Especially at a time when discrimination and hatred against the queer community is on the rise, it is very important to find places with people where we can be who we are. A place where we are heard, where we are supported and valued can save lives. For me, the power of community means solidarity. My community, which I helped to build over the years, became a family. They became a big part of my life and made it significantly more worth living.

In what ways does your work contribute to political and social change in Switzerland and across Europe and how do you view the role of European collaboration in strengthening advocacy for LGBTQIA+ communities?

With my work, I raise awareness among the population. In doing so, I contribute to the further development of our society. I create visibility to break down prejudices and nip discrimination in the bud. I was personally touched by the fact that someone who was reluctant to engage with trans issues changed their mind as a result of my video interview. This moment still gives me the strength to keep going today. Not necessarily for myself, but for all other affected people who need help. I think the role of European cooperation with regard to the LGBTIAQ+ community is enormously important. Discrimination and hatred will always exist in the world. I therefore think it is all the more important that we unite to focus on solidarity and caring for one another.
