On the occasion of the end of their visit of the high level European Union delegation to Khartoum, EU Ambassador Robert van den Dool wrapped up the outcomes of the visit and said:
"On 30 and 31 October 2019 a high level mission from Brussels visited Khartoum. The mission comprised Mr. Jean-Christophe Belliard, Deputy Secretary-General and Director-General for Political Affairs in the European Union External Action Service, Mr. Koen Doens, Director-General for Development Cooperation, and Alexander Rondos, EU Special Representative for the Horn of Africa.
Meetings were held with the Prime Minister of the Interim government of Sudan, Mr. Abdalla Hamdok, several ministers in his cabinet (Foreign Affairs, Justice, Industry and Trade, Social Development and Labour, Undersecretary for Finance), the deputy Chairman of the Sovereign Council, General Mohammed Hamdan Daglo, representatives of the judiciary (Chief Justice, Attorney-General), representatives of the Forces of Freedom and Change, and other international partners.
The goal of the visit was to learn about the current state of play in the democratic transition of Sudan, to demonstrate political support to the transitional government, and to identify how the EU can best support this all important political, economic and social process. The delegation conveyed to Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok the invitation of the EU High Representative Federica Mogherini to visit Brussels on 11 November for an exchange with the Foreign Affairs Council, the meeting of all 28 Foreign Ministers of the European Union.
The delegation stressed the willingness of the European Union to support Sudan during this crucial phase. Already now the EU ongoing envelope for development cooperation in Sudan equals 200 million Euros which is mostly channelled through the EU Africa Trust Fund. For the future, a first support package of 141 million Euros is being designed currently. Also, it is intended to provide additional 100 million Euros before the end of the year, including 25 million Euros in the area of humanitarian aid."
