New EU Water and Sanitation Project
EUR 2 million
Support Migrants and Host Communities in improving Access to Safe Water and Sanitation -Eastern Sudan
This programme is a component of a larger 15 M EUR intervention funded by the European Union Emergency Trust Fund for Stability addressing the root causes of problems in Sudan.
The aim is to bring drinkable and safe water to schools, health centres and hospitals in Kassala and Gedaref States:
The area of intervention is:
In Kassala State: Kassala Urban and Girba localities;
in Gedaref State: Al Fashega and Basonda.
Schools and health centres targeted:
In Kassala: 17 schools, 1 Health Center
In Gedaref: 9 schools, 1 Health Center, 1 Hospital
In order to improve access to safe water and to sanitation facilities, especially for the refugee camps and in neighbouring villages, the project will carry out a rapid needs assessment on water sources, latrines/sewage systems and waste management and disposal. The project will support localities to prepare a Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Sector Development Plans for each community, in close coordination with all stakeholders. It will provide renewable/sustainable energy pumping solutions (wind generators/ solar systems) either to improve or to rehabilitate existing water sources and purification and/or treatment plants.
The activity foresees two ways of intervention: Drilling of boreholes for the creation of water supply systems; in the localities where the drilling is not planned, the system will be linked to the existing pipelines.
The project will be implemented by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation.
