Text

Sudan is a very dynamic and diverse East African country, with more than 500 tribes and 300 languages. Khartoum is the state and capital, which has been in conflict with its identity as an African country with strong Arab ties and links.

The SAMA International Music Festival is a project co-funded by the European Union that aims to promote both traditional and contemporary Sudanese music and traditions through highlighting the diverse spectrum of Sudan’s cultural landscape. The festival will create a platform for musicians and artists from within and outside Sudan, to explore, collaborate, exchange, and present their works, within a safe and supportive space. It will be held from 16 – 26 October in six venues in Khartoum.

In addition to cultural exchange, SAMA intends to support the community through the creation of workshop and training activities designed to engage youth in alternative modes of expression through various fields of art. These activities will be conducted by experts and established artist representative of the various fields (from vocal training to reading/playing music).

The SAMA International Music Festival aims to establish itself as the first internationally recognized music festival in Sudan; which in turn, should create opportunities for further music exchange between Sudan and the rest of the world.

In 2017, the festival is coming with new creative ideas to link the culture and heritage of East and West Africa by fostering a collaboration of East and West African traditional music and dance. Bands will be invited from West Africa to engage in breathtaking performances and remarkable collaborations with counterparts from Sudan. The bands will come from Burkina Faso, Rwanda, and Sudan.
