European Union supports youth voices for peace and democracy in the Horn of Africa

Amplifying youth voices for peace and democracy in the Horn of Africa is a project implemented by Safer World Organization. The project is funded by the European Union with 450,000 Euros. The project is implemented in Sudan, South Sudan, Kenya and Somalia.

 

The project is expected to contribute to peace and democratisation in the four countries. It will build the capacity of young people to become active and acquire skills in democratic processes. The project launched a dialogue between 70 Sudanese and South Sudanese youth to promote peace in the two countries. 50 Youth organizations were trained to organise and actively participate in peace and democratization processes.

 

Background

 

In 1999, the United Nations General Assembly endorsed the recommendation made by the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth (Lisbon, 8-12 August 1998) that 12 August be declared International Youth Day.

 

The day is used to recognise the role of young people in peace and security and the role they can play in deterring and resolving conflicts, and are key constituents in ensuring the success of both peacekeeping and peacebuilding efforts.

International Youth Day 2017 wordwide is dedicated to celebrating the contributions of uoung men and women to conflict prevention and transformation as well as inclusion, social justice, and sustainable peace.
