Federica Mogherini, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, expressed solidarity today to the Prime Minister of Albania, Edi Rama, over a series of devastating earthquakes that hit Albania, injuring dozens of people and causing enormous damage to buildings and infrastructure.

In their contact, the High Representative wished speedy recovery to all the injured. She also underlined the readiness of the European Union to offer assistance, including through the Civil Protection Mechanism. As Prime Minister Rama cancelled his travel to New York for the UN General Assembly ministerial week, he will be replaced by acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gent Cakaj, at the dinner the High Representative is hosting with the Western Balkans leaders tonight.
