Head of the European Union Delegation to the Maldives, Mr. Tung-Lai Margue visited the Maldives from 5-8 October 2018. He was accompanied by the EEAS Head of Division for South Asia, Mrs. Caroline Vinot.
The officials called on the President-Elect Mr. Ibrahim Mohamed Solih as well as the outgoing Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Asim, the Elections Commission, and the Director-General of Transition. The officials also held meetings with political party representatives and leaders, civil society organizations, and members of the diplomatic community.
The visit reflects EU's continued interest in supporting the democratic aspirations of the Maldivian people. The officials welcomed the peaceful conduct on polling day and congratulated the President-Elect. They were reassured by the commitments made by all interlocutors for an orderly transfer of power. The EU also conveyed its readiness to strengthen bilateral relations. These include providing assistance in areas such as reform of the judiciary, strengthening respect for human rights, rule of law, anti-corruption strategies, and climate change. The EU urged all parties to act responsibly and look towards the full restoration of democratic institutions in the future.
