On 2-3 June, the Deputy Secretary-General of the European External Action Service, Jean-Christophe Belliard, will participate in the 17th International Institute of Strategic Studies Asia Security Summit in Singapore, commonly referred to as the Shangri-La Dialogue.

The Shangri-La Dialogue gathers ministers and delegates from over 50 countries and provides an annual, well-established platform to discuss security and defence issues in the Asia-Pacific region. The Deputy Secretary-General will address a Special Session on the theme of "The security and humanitarian crisis in Myanmar's Rakhine State".

The EU's active participation at the Shangri La Dialogue should also be seen in the context of the recent 'Council Conclusions on enhanced EU security cooperation in and with Asia', adopted by the 28 EU Foreign Ministers at the Foreign Affairs Council earlier this week. These Conclusions demonstrate the importance that the EU attaches to its and its Asian partners' security interests, as well as the EU's commitment to work with its Asian partners for peace and security, both regionally and beyond.

Global peace requires a global effort. At their meeting, EU foreign ministers identified key areas for deeper security engagement in Asia and with Asian partners: maritime security, cyber security, counter terrorism, hybrid threats, conflict prevention, the proliferation of chemical biological radiological and nuclear weapons and the development of regional cooperative orders. The Ministers underlined the need for security cooperation in and with Asian partners to become more operational. Therefore, the EU is preparing to increase its engagement with Asia and expand its cooperation into areas such as capacity building, training programmes, and joint exercises.
