Joint local statement on democracy in the Maldives

The European Union and the Embassies of Canada, Norway, Switzerland and the United States of America reiterate that legitimate opposition is a vital part of any healthy democracy. Opposition politicians ought to be able to conduct their activities without fear of intimidation or incarceration. It is critical for democracy in the Maldives that the Government respect fundamental freedoms, including freedom of assembly and freedom of speech. We will continue to monitor the respect for these freedoms, including in the run-up to the Local Council Elections.
