"The EU and its member states have not abandoned South Sudan in these critical times. The EU is engaged in programmes strengthening food security and infrastructure, public finance as well as basic services," said De Leo.

The troubling political and economic challenges now coupled with the recently declared famine couldn’t not deter a jovial Europe Day celebration in Juba, South Sudan.

The event was marked with pomp, glamour, social networking with plenty of cocktail fashioned bites and drinks.

The Ambassador of the European Union Delegation to South Sudan Stefano De Leo during his speech, reiterated the commitment of EU and its member states in supporting South Sudan at its current critical time. "The EU and its member states have not abandoned South Sudan in these critical times. The EU is engaged in programmes strengthening food security and infrastructure, public finance as well as basic services," said De Leo. "The recently launched impact project will support, with assistance of implementing partners, 30,000 primary school teachers all over the country for 18 months."

De Leo commended the UN Mission in South Sudan for protecting and saving lives of several citizens and called upon the government and opposition forces to silence the guns and instead lead the citizens to peace and prosperity as they had promised during the liberation struggle.

According to the visibly concerned ambassador, South Sudan belongs to all its citizens and the warring parties should resolve their differences through dialogue. Speaking on the UN Radio (Miraya) on Europe Day, De Leo said long lasting peace is based on compromise and dialogue.

Representing the Transtional Government of National Unity (TGoNU), the South Sudan Minister of Agriculture Hon. Onyoti Adigo, who was also the chief guest, congratulated and commended the EU and its member states for their continued commitment in supporting sustainable development in the country.

Mr David Shearer,  Special Representative of the UN Secretary General, too attended EU Day.
