For nearly a decade, the EU in Lesotho has worked together with Lesotho's Ministry of Social Development and the Lesotho chapter of UNICEF on the Strengthening Governance of Social Protection in Lesotho: Building an Integrated Social Protection System programme. The aim of the programme is to strengthen and integrate the Kingdom's social protection system whose goal is to assist the most economically and socially vulnerable segments of the country's society. This is to ensure that Lesotho's vulnerable receive the kind of sustainable social assistance and services that they need.
A pillar of the social protection strategy is the National Information System for Social Assistance (NISSA), a single integrated web-based database where the socio-economic information on all households in the country is stored to identify vulnerable populations. NISSA will objectively and transparently target and select those sections of the population who are in need of support and thus maximise the impact of the Lesotho's social protection system.
