Asia matters – for Europe. And Europe matters – for Asia. Today, we celebrate the connectivity between our two regions with "ASEM Day".
The Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) encompasses 53 partners from the two continents. Together they represent 60% of the world's population, 60% of global GDP and 60% of global trade. ASEM provides a unique, informal platform for dialogue and cooperation. Partners come together to work on the challenges of a fast-changing world, from trade and investment to climate change, but also security challenges such as counter-terrorism, migration, maritime security and cyber issues.
The dynamic relationship between the EU and the Republic of Korea is a shining example of the connectivity between Europe and Asia. The EU and the Republic of Korea both support the international rules based system and recognise that peace and security in one region is indivisible from the other. Bilateral trade and investment builds sustainable growth and jobs in each region, with the EU standing as the largest source of investment in Korea and its third largest trading partner.
This connectivity in all its forms, including people-to-people links, is being strengthened through the mutually reinforcing aspects of the EU's Connectivity Strategy and the Republic of Korea's New Northern and New Southern Policy.
Building on the success of the Brussels ASEM Summit in 2018, I am confident that this will be another year of deepening connectivity that brings benefits to Europeans and Asians. I am certain that this will underpin the dynamic and deepening relationship between the European Union and Korea. The ASEM Summit in Seoul in 2000 was the event which connected me to Korea – taking into account the preparatory work, I will celebrate 20 years of connection with the Republic of Korea!
