A TAIEX Workshop on Countering Online Gender Based Violence was held in Seoul on 15th March. The Korean Minister of Gender Equality and 93 experts from government, media and civil society joined experts from Belgium, Finland and the UK. Dr Joëlle Hivonnet, Minister-Counsellor, described the situation in the EU and concerted actions under the 2017 European year to counter gender based violence, before Member States experts (from Belgium, Finland and the United Kingdom) described their experiences in addressing new forms of gender-based violence online including human trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation, image-based sexual abuse of women (so-called revenge porn and "sexting"). Discussions focussed on legal and technological responses to these new threats and how to promote "digital citizenship" to create a safe cyberspace. The EU Head of Delegation, Ambassador-designate Michael Reiterer, and Minister Kang Eun-hee (Gender Equality and Family) agreed to continue such exchanges. The workshop was covered in almost 30 Korean newspaper articles this week.
