26 October 2021, New York – Video message by European Commissioner for International Partnerships, Jutta Urpilainen, at the 76th Session of the United Nations High Level Event on Delivering Climate Action: for People, Planet & Prosperity

Dear colleagues,

It is important, just a few days before COP26, to come together.

The International Panel on Climate Change and the United Nations’ report on Parties’ Nationally Determined Contributions are both revealing.

We are not yet on the Paris-consistent pathway.

While paving the way, the EU has been consistently encouraged others to step up their efforts. We continue to do so.

The challenge is common. The responsibility is shared. We need partnerships.

Adaptation, along with mitigation, is an urgent concern for our partners.

That is why the EU is fully committed to achieving the Paris Agreement global goal on adaptation. We support solutions that enhance resilience at home and around the world.

Words must be matched with actions. Action demands resources.

The EU and its Member States, Team Europe is the largest contributor of climate finance to developing countries.

The European Commission recently announced an additional EUR 4 billion for climate for the next 7 years.

It is vital that we all demonstrate our strong support for a successful outcome in Glasgow.

The time to do that is now.
