Webinar on Unpaid care work: Its Impact on Women's careers, their financial freedom and the economy

26/08/2021 - 08:59
Conference/seminarThematic series

The disruption caused by the onset of the Covid-19 global pandemic was an unforeseen stumbling block for developments made towards greater gender equality, professional economic parity, inclusion and transformation, the eradication of gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide, as well as the economic empowerment of women in South Africa and Africa. As the world struggled to flatten the curve and arrest the rate of infection, a new socio-cultural dynamic developed to exacerbate the challenges faced by women/caregivers.

We are reminded that globally, women represent 70% of the health and social sector workforce, and that on average, women have been shown to do three times as much unpaid care and domestic work as men. This has long-term consequences for their economic security and overall well-being.

Traditionally, family-based work roles remain largely in the female domain. Unlike their male counterparts, female members in most families continue to be expected to factor in time for ‘duty of care.’ This invariably affects the amount of time female family members are able to spend on focused, income-generating work. And so the question: how can a society, or even a country, commercially quantify unpaid care work?

In this discussion, made possible by the European Union Delegation to South Africa and facilitated by the Mail & Guardian, speakers will highlight realities of Unpaid Care Work. The participating industry experts and thought leaders will relate how existing gender biases were, and continue to be, exacerbated by the pandemic and will shed light on the financial/economic impact on women’s career development and women’s financial freedom. The exchange seeks to identify viable strategies to contribute to an inclusive, sustainable economic recovery for South Africa.
