“My city, my future”

10th to 31st August

The European Union announces the second edition of the Silsiladda Nabadda poetry competition. Building on the success of the 2019 contest that celebrated the theme of democracy, the 2020 edition invites the Somali youth to deepen last year’s poetic online discussion by submitting a poem reflecting the theme “My city, my future”.

This year’s theme is not a random choice. The Somali youth has its own vision of how they want their country to evolve and how they want their cities to reflect that change. The theme has already sparked a great deal of attention on social media where Somali youth have been sharing unique photos of their hometowns. So for this year’s contest, participants should tell us what makes their city or town so special and what changes and opportunities they hope to see to build a better future.

The 3 winners of the 2020 edition will receive a high-end smartphone with selfie stick and microphone kit, while honourable mentions will be given to the top 12 entries. This year’s poetry contest will have indeed an essential audio-visual angle. Open to all Somalis, participants are requested to submit their poem in a video format of maximum 2 minutes. The poems can have any style such as spoken word, a slideshow with voice-over or even a song. The poems can be submitted in Somali or English language and must be the original work by the person entering the competition. All poems should be submitted between 10th  and 31st of August 2020 through the link https://www.silsiladdanabadda.com/p/896810 where participants can also find more information.

Background

The European Union launched the Silsiladda Nabadda poetry competition last year with the support of young Somalis to bring back the revered and historic Silsilad poetry tradition. The youth driven initiative, that aims at sparking poetic exchanges, received entries across all four corners of the world and awarded 5 winners.
