Joint Local Statement following executions on 25 July, 30 July and 13 August 2025
18 August 2025
The Delegation of the European Union issues the following statement, together with the diplomatic missions of the EU Member States and the diplomatic missions of Norway, Switzerland and the United Kingdom in Singapore:
Following the executions of three unnamed individuals - a 56-year old Malaysian man on 25 July 2025, a 44-year-old Malaysian man on 30 July 2025 and a 60-year old Singaporean man on 13 August 2025 - we reiterate our unequivocal opposition to the use of the death penalty in all cases and in all circumstances.
The death penalty is a cruel, inhumane and degrading punishment, representing the ultimate denial of human dignity. Moreover, it fails to act as a deterrent to crime and makes miscarriages of justice irreversible.
We call on Singapore – among the few remaining States that still carry out death sentences -to introduce a moratorium as a first step towards abolition, in line with the worldwide trend.
